Historical Fiction Book Project:
Essential Question: Does historical fiction accurately reflect the events and culture of the time? (Fact v. fiction)
Historical Fiction: Historical fiction tells a story that is set in the past. That setting is usually real and drawn from history, and often contains actual historical persons, but the principal characters tend to be fictional. Writers of stories in this genre, while penning fiction, attempt to capture the spirit, manners, and social conditions of the persons or time(s) presented in the story, with due attention paid to period detail and truth. Reading a piece of historical fiction can give you insight into a particular period. Like most art forms however, writers often take ‘dramatic license’ in their writing.
Assignment: You will each be responsible for reading a piece of historical fiction (look at the list of possible titles). You will need to have your selection approved. You will conduct research on the time period associated with your book, select vocabulary and quotes from your book, research the “historical” elements of your book, and complete writing assignments based on your selection. Ultimately, you will compile these smaller assignments into one, final project.
